February 2016

Dave is always telling me not to write so much, and our media-savvy friend Pete just reiterated that. Maybe they’re right! I’ll try to keep it to a minimum. Here are some photos from February. I’ll catch you up on January and December soon, I hope.

On Monday, Phoebe was tripped on the playground. When I picked her up from daycare, she was limping on a very swollen ankle. An x-ray on Tuesday morning suggested that it’s a sprain instead of a broken growth plate, though she’ll have another x-ray on Monday. She ended up with a boot to stabilize her ankle.

Dave had a Flatirons Jazz Orchestra concert on Friday the 12th, so the kids and I ate eggplant and went to bed without him. That evening, I did most of the packing so we could drive to Lake City early Saturday morning to meet the Bronskis for a weekend of ice climbing. We managed to leave at 6:30 a.m. and arrive in Lake City around 1:00 p.m. We had a great time, overall, though Pete and Kelli were just recovering from strep throat and Marin and Charlotte ended up with it.

On Saturday night, Benjamin tumbled down a couple of stairs in the cabin we were renting, scaring Marin half to death, and then tripped up them and cracked his chin wide open on the edge of a step. It was clear right away that he was going to need stitches. Kelli called 911 while we tried to stop the bleeding and comfort Benjamin. We ended up meeting a wonderful doctor and his nurse wife at the little clinic in Lake City (we were so glad we didn’t have to drive 45 minutes to Gunnison!). They were gentle and professional, and Benjamin was a trooper. He didn’t like being held down, but he was very brave and stayed as calm as could be expected while receiving 9 stitches. Happily, we left with a handful of Spiderman band-aids!

Phoebe threw up twice in the car on the way home (she gets carsick). Despite all of that, we had such a beautiful day on Sunday, and all the grown-ups got to swing the tools a bit. It was a fun vacation.

Overnight we had a huge snowstorm. School was closed (though daycare was open).
